One of the fastest-growing sports, stand up paddleboarding, or SUP, is making a splash in Rochester.

Stand up paddleboards can go anywhere a canoe or kayak can go, said Mike Pattinson, general manager of Tyrol Ski & Sports , 1923 Second St. S.W., Rochester, which carries Bic SUPs .

"They give you a really good workout for your balance and posture," he said, explaining that the board can also be used for yoga. "It's a cool cross-training thing and a really nice way to get outside and enjoy summer versus being in a gym."

Like test-driving a car, you can try out a SUP, kayak or canoe during Tyrol's paddle nights.

"It's a real nice way to make sure that you like it and want to pursue a sport," Pattinson said. "Our staff can help guide them to the appropriate products."

Call or stop by the store at least two hours prior to the paddle night to register and pick out what products you'd like to try. Upcoming paddle nights will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21 at Chester Woods Park.

Sweet on you

Save room for dessert during this week's Thursdays on First & Third street market. Patty Brown, who runs Freedom Boutique at Christian Book and Gift in Rochester, wrote in to suggest the cupcakes by Sugar.

"They are so good, they are baking the cupcakes for my daughter's upcoming wedding," she said.

Sugar , a local baking business started by three sisters, Tammy Carroll, Jordan Karow and Nina Webbles, out of their homes, debuted its cupcakes and other sweet treats at the market this year. Thursday's event will be Sugar's third and final appearance for this season.

The booth will have a selection of cupcakes, cookies, bars and cake pops. Cupcake flavors include white chocolate raspberry, lemon curd, carrot, red velvet, salted caramel, chocolate coconut, chocolate peanut butter and German chocolate.

"It's been really good. We had a lot of people on the second time that came back from the first," Webbles said.

Made in the Shade

If you're looking for a fun summer gift idea, you'll have it made in the shade at Shades of Green, 2003 Second St. S.W., Rochester.

The store is stocked with cute and clever items and lots of "cool" ones too. Check out the Chillsner , a beer-bottle-sized Corkcicle that keeps beer cool until the last sip, no matter how long you sip it. For wine lovers, there are wine glasses that when frozen will keep your chardonnay at the perfect cellar temperature. Or the Govino , shatterproof wine glasses and decanter.

Other fun items are the indoor-outdoor owl pillows and picture frames shaped like glasses frames.
