You Betcha Cupcake, of Rochester, is offering two unique ways to get your hands on some of those sweet little cakes.

First is a "Cupcake Workshop 101," led by Julie Herrera-Lemler,owner and creator of You Betcha Cupcake and local field editor for Taste of Home Magazine.

The class, which will go step-by-step from making to decorating these personal cakes, is being held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cook's Pantry, 1190 16th St. S.W., Suite 100, Rochester. Cost: $45. Register online or in the store.

Then, on May 27, it's "Cupcake" night at Canvas & Chardonnay , 317 S. Broadway, Rochester, where participants will paint a picture of a cupcake while indulging in some of Herrera-Lemler's sweet creations. Time: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Cost: $35 for the painting class, $2.50 per cupcake or $1.25 per mini cupcake. Register online.

Herrera-Lemler has been baking and selling cupcakes in Rochester since 2009, when, inspired by the Food Network, she joined the Great American Bake Sale and sold cupcakes during the Rochester garage sale weekend to raise money for Share Our Strength, an organization to end child hunger.

After three years of being told that she should go into the cupcake business, in November she did just that after taking classes to get licensed and finding a commercial kitchen to rent, she said.

Her little, hand-delivered cakes have become a popular way to say "thank you" to clients or staff, and are also just right for birthdays, baby showers, graduations and weddings.

Seasonal blooms

There aren't too many blooms in the garden just yet, but Barb Bartelson, who co-owns BB's Creative Home Decor with her two daughters, is hoping to change that.

The seasonal shop, which recently reopened at 220 E. Main St., Lewiston, for spring and summer, is filled with beautiful metal flowers that will spruce up the garden until Mother Nature takes over.

"To keep the color we suggest to do a coat of polyurethane, but if you want that rustic look, let the weather do its magic," Bartelson said.

BB's also has a line of decorative painted barns made out of galvanized metal similar to that of a car, she said.

Along with the patio and garden art, the store has a selection of home decor, including frames, potpourri, candles, plates, figurines, furniture and linens. They also carry coffee and tea.
