What's in Store: Spend a week at local stores

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Flurries of fun are in the forecast for local stores as the holidays approach.

Monday at the Mall

Special Pet Photo Evenings with Santa come to a close tonight at Apache Mall. Beginning at 6 p.m. in Apache Mall's Center Court, furry friends are welcome to visit with Santa.

Monday Downtown

The Downtown Rochestergift card can be purchased this Monday and next Monday at the Shops at University Square. Accepted at downtown restaurants and shops, it can be an easy gift to grab for the local, downtown shopping enthusiast you know. It's on my wish list. Gift cards also can be purchased online at .

Tuesday at TerraLoco

"It's going to be really fun," said Tiffany Piotrowicz, store manager at TerraLoco. "We're giving away at least six pairs of shoes, over $2,000 worth of giveaways. We'll have beverages for children and adults, there'll be music; we'll be open late."

TerraLoco will host a Customer Appreciation Night Tuesday. In addition to discounts, drinks and food, there will be a 5K supporting Toys for Tots at 6 p.m. Entry fee is $5 for the race.

Representatives of Hoka and Saucony will be at the event and customers can try out their shoes and socks.

While there, shop for gifts such as the OLovesM zipper pouch, a staff recommendation and a gift on my Christmas wish list. "It's just the right size for a make-up bag or for toiletries at the gym," Piotrowicz said. "Plus, it's made from yoga mats so it's eco-friendly and easy to clean." The yoga mats being used to make the zipper pouches are leftover remnants from producing yoga mats, not used ones. The zipper pouch retails for $12.95.

OLovesM is a line TerraLoco has carried since opening. "The company is out of Colorado," Piotrowicz said, "and her purses are completely green and made in the USA. The strapping she uses was purchased from a sandal company that was going out of business."

Wednesday at People's Food Co-op

"At the Closing Reception, I think we're going to do hot cocoa and some snacks and people can build some community together," said Store Manager Lizzy Haywoodof People's Food Co-op. The reception is scheduled to coincide with the store's weekly Wednesday Happy Hour. "It's already kind of a party atmosphere," she said.

Meet artist Christ Dahl, whose work has been exhibited in the People's Food Co-Op's dining room since Sept. 17, at the closing reception, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"The Rochester Art Center is curating it," Haywood said. It's part of a series titled Locally Grown.

Dahl, a Rochester native, uses photography, video and mixed media to understand complex relationships between memory, distance and personal events that take place over the course of generations.

During Wednesday Happy Hours, anyone can take advantage of 50 percent savings on select produce, in addition to other specials offered. Membership is not required.

Friday at Barnes & Noble Apache Mall
