Show: Bosch

Service: Amazon

Episodes: 60

Genre: Crime

Age range: Teen+

The gist: Harry Bosch is a tough-guy Los Angeles Police detective with his sights set on justice. Titus Welliver is brilliant as the curmudgeonly cop, and the supporting cast of Madison Lintz as his daughter, Jamie Hector as his partner, and Amy Aquino as his boss is as solid as they come. Compelling plot lines and believable characters make this a must-watch.

Show: Northern Rescue

Service: Netflix

Episodes: 10

Genre: Drama

Age range: Family

The gist: This Canadian import features Billy Baldwin as an aging Search and Rescue commander who loses his wife to cancer. Newly widowed and denied a long-sought promotion, he moves his family to the remote island where he grew up. The camera follows each of the characters: Baldwin, his three children and his sister-in-law as they cope with the grief of losing the family matriarch. Trying to play the aloof father, Baldwin comes across as flat and lifeless, but the rest of the cast picks up much of the slack.

Show: “Flinch”

Service: Netflix

Episodes: 3 and growing

Genre: Game show

Age range: Teen+

The gist: At first blush, this Netflix original appears to be a campier, more fun version of “Fear Factor.” Contestants are subjected to cringe-inducing pranks. Those who flinch the fewest times, win. The show is getting mixed reviews from viewers, some of whom call it televised torture. While it might appeal to ambulance chasers and others of such ilk, most people will tap out early.
