Margaret Eleanor Berktold, 93, of Lake City, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at the Lake City Care Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Kellogg, to James Costello and Ann (O’Flaherty) Costello. Margaret moved to Lake City when she was 6 years old. She graduated from Mary E. McCahill Institute in Lake City. Margaret married Engelbert Berktold on June 17, 1940, at St. Mary’s Church in Lake City. They farmed in Mount Pleasant Township. Engelbert passed away in 1993. Margaret moved to Lake City in 2000. She opened Margaret’s Hideaway Book Store in Lake City.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City and the St. Mary’s CCW. She enjoyed spending her winters in Arizona and she was well known for her homemade apple pies. Margaret loved playing the piano and spending time with her family.
She is survived by daughters, MaryAnn (Gary) Hibbard of Milltown, Wis., Margaret Phalen of Helena, Mont., Patricia Berktold of Chanhassen and Marie (Don) Sprout of Wildwood, Fla.; sons, Theodore (Brenda) of Eugene, Ore., Joseph (Dawn) of Lake City, Bert of Tucson, Ariz., Anthony (Diane) of Lake City and Bernard (Donna) of Lake City; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Engelbert Berktold; sisters, Mary (Sister Cianan) Costello and Rita Ann Perkins; brothers, Joseph Costello, James Costello and John Costello; two infant children and one granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City, with Father Richard Dernek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City. Rosary Services will be held Friday at 5 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Berktold, Christopher Berktold, Matthew Berktold, Aaron Berktold, Brian Berktold and Michael Berktold.
