Mary C. Essig - Spring Valley

A Celebration of Life Visitation for Mary C. (Eckes) Essig will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley.

Mary Essig, 73, of Spring Valley, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mary Carol Eckes was born May 7, 1938, in Minneapolis, to Joseph and Irene (Laurent) Eckes. She was united in marriage to Denny Essig on July 25, 1956, at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Wayzata. Mary worked for Dr. John Ryan in Wayzata before they moved to Spring Valley in 1975 where they were partners in Denny’s Super Valu.

Mary was a homemaker and also worked at Denny’s Super Valu until they sold the store in 1992. She later worked for the Stewartville Nursing Home and then for Mayo Clinic at Saint Marys Hospital in housekeeping until her retirement in 2004.

Mary enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing Scrabble, antiquing, crocheting, knitting and cooking for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Denny of Spring Valley; a son, Bill (Laura) Essig of White Oak, Ga.; a daughter, Robin (Scott) Balliet of Spring Valley; five grandchildren, Kris (Linda), Jamie, Kassi, Brandon and Shawn; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Jace; and four sisters, Laverne Theis, Rosalyn Hughes, Fran Rutherford and Mona Swaggert, all of the Twin Cities area.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Kelly Essig-Hinze; and three brothers.

Memorials preferred to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of her great granddaughter, Lauren.
