ROCHESTER — Mary Jo Peterson Hayward, 84, a recent resident of Rochester, and a longtime resident of New Brighton, Minn., died peacefully at Seasons Hospice, Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.
She was born July 11, 1926, in St. Paul, to Clarence and JoAnna (Rotegard) Peterson. Mary Jo was a graduate of Washburn High School and the University of Minnesota. She worked as a medical technologist at the University of Minnesota Hospital. She married John T. Hayward on May 3, 1952. Family, friends and faith came first in her life and she modeled these values her whole life.
Mary Jo was a member of the Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Rochester and a longtime member of New Brighton United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women in Minneapolis.
She is survived by her children, Nancy (Bob) Windels of Eden Prairie, and Mark Hayward of Rochester; grandchildren, Laura, Jonathan and Katie Windels all of Eden Prairie, and Ariel and Sam Hayward both of Rochester; brother-in-law, Dr. John Huff of Bloomington; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Andy) Slater of New Richmond, Wis.; and Marjorie Keefe of Minneapolis; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by husband, John T. Hayward, son, Tom Hayward, parents, Clarence and JoAnna Peterson, sister, Nancy Lou Peterson, aunts, Ruth Bigelow and Rangdi Rotegard.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place N.W. in Rochester, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Visitation in the Twin Cities will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, 5000 W. 50th St. in Edina, as well as one hour prior to service at the church on Thursday.
A Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Rd. in Edina, with a reception following the service. Private interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Saint Anthony, Minn.
