Morton H. Levitt - West Des Moines, Iowa

ROCHESTER — Morton Haskell Levitt, 83, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Bickford Cottage in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Jewish Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Morton was born the son of Samuel and Sarah (Dubansky) Levitt on Sept. 4, 1927, in Des Moines. He graduated from East High School in 1944 and honorably served in the U.S. Army Artillery during the Korean Conflict. On July 8, 1951, Morton was united in marriage to Marjorie I. Cherry in Des Moines. They made a home in Des Moines for most of their lives except for the years 1967-1972 when they lived in Rochester. Morton was a salesman for Roberts and Williams Furniture.

He was a member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue and the Masonic Lodge. Morton was also a Jazz musician.

Morton is survived by his sons, Jeff (Marsha) Levitt of Des Moines and Mark (Kyta) Levitt of El Paso, Texas; grandchildren, Ariella (Jared) Finch and Rafi Levitt all of Des Moines, Adam (Julia) Levitt of Monterey, Calif., and Elizabeth (Greg) Gum of Seoul, Korea; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah Finch and Katie Gum. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marjorie, and two sisters, Edith Cohen and Helen Mezvinsky.


Memorials may be directed to Tifereth Israel Synagogue or Beth El Jacob Synagogue.
