ELBA — Ahh, the regular trout-fishing opener, a time to celebrate spring, the joys of fishing in a clear stream and friends - or at least that is how most people dream of it.
The reality of today’s opener was that anglers dressed in heavy goose-hunting clothes, had to knock ice off tips of their rods and were generally cold and fishless.
Thursday’s heavy rains turned many streams more the color of chocolate milk, making it hard to find the best places to fish. Last August’s floods also rearranged many creeks and streams, so even veterans weren’t sure where the best holes were any more.

Still, anglers came out, including to traditional places, such as along the Whitewater River in the Elba area.
While conditions were poor to miserable, the consoled themselves with knowing it’s supposed to get much warmer soon and they then truly celebrate spring - without wearing goose-hunting clothes.
