ST. PAUL, Minn. — Seventeen St. Paul publics works employees are suspended following revelations that pothole-patching crews were slacking off on the job.
Mayor Chris Coleman announced the suspensions Monday, saying it was the maximum allowed with the evidence he had. No one was fired.
The evidence was KSTP-TV video footage showing workers taking long breaks — sometimes for hours at a time — when they should've been filling potholes.
The suspensions total 59 days without pay. Other discipline includes eight letters of reprimand, while two of the 17 workers are being demoted.

Coleman says the discipline affects all levels of the department, from street workers to supervisors.
