St. Olaf College plans events

NORTHFIELD — The following events will be offered at the St. Olaf college campus. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

• Saturday, April 19: 3:30 p.m., Christensen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall. St. Olaf Handbell Choir concert. 7:30 p.m., Boe Memorial Chapel. St. Olaf Band spring concert.

• Sunday, April 20: 3:30 p.m., Boe Memorial Chapel. Andrew Carter, composer, will conduct the St. Olaf Choir/Chapel Choir/Cantorei and the St. Olaf Orchestra.

• Monday, April 21: 3:30 p.m., Holland Hall 413. Lecture entitled "Controlling Toxic Water Pollution," presented by William Easter, professor of economics at the University of Minnesota and senior author of the World Bank publication "Water Resources and Management Policy." Easter’s recent research includes a study of water markets, an economic analysis of agricultural pollution of groundwater and the cost of alternative methods for providing urban water supplies in developing nations.

Bluesman, party band to perform

Bill Homans, the bluesman who will perform in Rochester Thursday, is best known by his stage name Watermelon Slim.

Watermelon Slim and The Workers will perform Thursday at Whiskey Bones Roadhouse, 3820 N. Broadway. Music starts at 8 p.m. Cover at the door.

In December 2006, Slim garnered a record-tying six 2007 Blues Music Award nominations.

Casablanca Orchestra, the party band also known as CBO, performs Friday at Whiskey Bones. The band plays a mix of psychedelic 1960s music, 70s rock and disco, 80s punk and new way and today’s hit dance songs. Music starts at 9 p.m. Cover at the door.

Let’s talk about art

Scott Stulen, the associate curator and curator of education at the Rochester Art Center, has taken a new position at the Walker Art Center, but will remain connected with local artists.

Stulen will be the project director of mnartists.org, an online database of Minnesota artists and organizations. His last day at the art center will be May 10. In preparation for the move, Stulen will hold an open discussion of the Rochester art scene, what works and what doesn’t, as part of the Professional Practices Seminars at the art center. The discussion will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday. Admission is free.
