What’s that red thing called?

The red thing above the beak is a "snood," and the one below the beak is a "wattle." Want to learn more turkey facts? Check out Oxbow Park’s Wild Turkeys program. The all-ages interactive presentation starts in the Zollman Zoo’s nature center and showcases the zoo’s four wild turkeys (two hens and two roosters).

Free. Call if weather looks questionable for possible program changes.

Music to your ears

Your kids like music — they say they’d even like to play an instrument. But which one? If you’re wondering what the right instrument might be, check out this Saturday’s SEMYO "Just For Kids" concert.

The SEMYO youth orchestras and ensembles will perform a wide range of popular and classical selections. Afterward, participants will learn more about the various instruments during the "petting zoo" (a chance to get an up-close look at and listen to all the instruments). Tickets are $5 at the door.

Membership in SEMYO is by audition only. Youth in grades 5 through 12 are grouped into four orchestras and ensembles that practice weekly September through May. Saturday’s event is not only a terrific opportunity to check out instruments, it’s a great opportunity to check out SEMYO and see if it’s something your little musician is interested in pursuing.
