1982 — 25 years ago

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of cancer of the lungs, larynx and esophagus. The report by the surgeon general is the first devoted to assessing the association between smoking and specific types of cancer.

1957 — 50 years ago

Rural students in Fillmore County have raised $374.50 for the March of Dimes through special events and donations. There are 70 rural schools in Fillmore County with a total of 960 pupils. The Red School in York Township, with 15 pupils, contributed $83, and the District 152 School near Harmony, with 21 pupils, raised $52.


1932 — 75 years ago

Rochester joined the rest of the nation in observing the anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Flags were displayed from the tops of public buildings, and the national colors were shown in the front of many homes.
