Saloon’s grand opening gets Lewd

A grand opening event at the Mantorville Saloon is slated this weekend.

The Mantorville Saloon recently received an interior makeover by new owner Steve Williams. The Saloon also added live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Minneapolis band Lewd Panache will play for the grand opening party Friday. There will also be drink specials all night.

Mantorville Saloon is at 501 N. Main St. in Mantorville. No cover.

Aria group crosses over to ‘Dark Side’

There is light opera, and then there are the "Tales From the Dark Side" that will be presented by the Rochester Aria Group at 7:30 p.m. May 3 at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1727 Walden Lane S.W., Rochester.

The concert will feature scenes from Verdi’s "Rigoletto," Bizet’s "Carmen" and Puccini’s "Turandot," among others.

David Walsh, director of opera at the University of Minnesota, is working with the group for this performance. Among featured singers is tenor Dominick Rodriguez, who had a promising career sidetracked last year by lymphoma and is now returning to the stage.

Two young singers will debut with the group: Erin Hodgson, a high school senior from West St. Paul, and Maranda Childs, a senior at St. Olaf College.

Tickets are $15 for adults, available at the door. Children 14 and younger are admitted free.

Iowa films highlight festival

MASON CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Independent Film Festival is Friday through Sunday at Music Man Square in Mason City.

Among the documentary films to be shown is "The Last Wright," about a Mason City hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Among other Iowa-made films are "The Final Season," about the Norway, Iowa, baseball team and starring Tom Arnold, and "Haunting Villisca," based on a 1912 murder mystery.

Guests include independent director Henry Jaglom, actress Karen Black and actress Tanna Frederick, a Mason City native.
