Catherine Cojocaru of Rochester correctly spelled her first word in tonight’s finals of the National Spelling Bee, nailing "Huguenot," a name for French Protestants, who fled from religious persecution in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The competition is airing nationally on ABC-TV.
The national final rounds started tonight with 12 spellers. One contestant misspelled a word. The remaining 11 will advance to the ninth round.
They will continue to advance as many rounds until one speller is left.
