5,000 deer to be tested for disease

Associated Press

More than 5,000 deer killed by hunters this fall in Minnesota will be tested for chronic wasting disease, wildlife officials said.

The plan, announced Thursday by the Department of Natural Resources, marks the first large-scale testing effort for the disease in Minnesota.

Chronic wasting disease is an incurable, brain-destroying illness that causes deer, elk, moose and caribou to grow thin and die.
