Two fatal accidents in less than 24 hours have claimed the lives of three people in southeastern Minnesota, according to the State Patrol.

The first accident, at 11:02 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Wabasha County Road 18 on the outskirts of Kellogg, took the lives of a Brownsdale couple.

The patrol said Arthur Holst, 94, was driving west on the county road and was trying to cross the highway when the car was hit broadside by a pickup. Holst and his wife, Lucinda, 89, died at the scene.

The driver of the southbound pickup, Kenneth Simon, 23, of Mauston, Wis., was injured but was not hospitalized.

In the second accident, Justin Atkinson, 19, of Lake City died Friday morning after his truck rolled over on U.S. 63 south of Olmsted County Road 21, about six miles north of Rochester. The patrol said he was southbound on the highway when the pickup went off the road, hit a field approach and rolled. He was partially ejected.
