AUSTIN — A young Austin boy was injured Saturday night when he wandered into the street and was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision.

According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, about 10 p.m. Saturday, a 3-year-old boy was hit near the intersection of First Street and Third Avenue Southwest, a residential neighborhood. The vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV of unknown make or model, did not stop after striking the boy.

McKichan said the boy was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys in Rochester with several serious injuries. No update on his condition was available. His name is not being released.

The boy's mother and a couple that she was visiting witnessed the incident, McKichan said, but the boy went into the street on his own. As soon as the incident occurred, emergency medical help was summoned.

Austin police are still searching for the vehicle, asking residents in the area with a camera system to check those systems for any relevant video. The SUV may have sustained some visible damage somewhere near the passenger-side headlight.
