The driver of a sport-utility vehicle died Friday after his vehicle crashed into a bridge in rural Sargeant and erupted into flames, the Mower County Sheriff's Department said Saturday morning.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 33000 block of 670th Avenue in rural Sargeant at 3:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a one-vehicle accident with a male trapped unconscious and the vehicle on fire.

The person who reported the accident told law enforcement that the vehicle had hit a bridge, it appeared there was only one occupant in the vehicle, and the fire was rapidly spreading.

Deputies arrived on the scene to find that the SUV was fully engulfed in flames and the lone occupant clearly appeared to be deceased. Hayfield Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire.

The body was recovered from the vehicle. It has not yet been identified, and was transported to the Regional Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.
