GRAND MARAIS, Minn. -- A 73-year-old Colorado man apparently drowned Monday on Loon Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness after his canoe capsized during a thunderstorm.

The body of Wayne L. Morrow, of Fort Lupton, Colo., was found July 19 by a remotely operated underwater vehicle in about 61 feet of water in East Loon Bay of Loon Lake, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded to a 911 call just before noon of a canoe that had capsized during strong winds in a thunderstorm. One of the paddlers, Dennis M. Guenther, 65, of Grand Junction, Colo., made it to shore, but was unable to locate Morrow.

The sheriff’s office said life jackets were in the canoe, but neither man was wearing them.

Loon Lake is about 15 miles east of Crane Lake in the northwestern corner of the BWCAW.
