11 police killed in attack
Taliban militants attacked a group of police officers sleeping on the mud floor of an isolated roadside checkpoint early today in southern Afghanistan, killing 11 in the latest assault against the nation’s vulnerable police force.
Meanwhile, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said two of its soldiers were killed and two were wounded in a separate explosion Sunday in the south. The British Defense Ministry confirmed that two Royal Air Force servicemen were killed when their vehicle hit an explosive device.
Insurgents apparently sneaked up on the police checkpoint 15 miles north of Kandahar — the Taliban’s former stronghold — just after midnight.
