BASEBALL

hiawatha valley league

Kenyon-Wanamingo 9, Hayfield 2

K-W was clinging to a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning when Justin Buchardt broke the game open with a two-run single. Pitcher Adam Hope took it from there. Hope worked all seven innings, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out eight. Neither one of Hayfield's runs was earned. Hope also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Also for the Knights, Jake Hockinson was 2-for-3 with a double. For Hayfield, Cody Schieck drove in both Viking runs with a base hit in the fourth.

Kasson-Mantorville 9, Lake City 0

Nick Albrect pitched six innings of three-hit ball for the road win. He struck out three. Eric Gruhlke pitched the final inning to complete the shutout and also drove in four runs. Matt Franke was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Kasson-Mantorville (9-8, 8-5 HVL).

Sterling Malcomsom had two of the four hits for Lake City (7-10, 7-8 HVL).

Byron 8, Pine Island 4

Jason Rathbun went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs as Byron (7-10) won on the road. Adam Schroeder two hits and also picked up the win with a seven-hitter. He struck out seven and walked four. Bryce Fogelson had a two-run single to give Byron a 5-0 lead in the third inning.

Tyler Robertson drove in two runs for Pine Island (4-15, 3-12 HVL).

Triton 11, Stewartville 3

Triton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on five hits and one error. Among the five hits in the inning were doubles by Adam Schmoll and Ryan Loupe. Trevor Kispert, Tyler Kispert and Brian Jones led the Cobras' 11-hit attack. Trevor Kispert was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Andy Dass and Isaac Johnson doubled for Stewartville, but beside those two hits only three singles were scattered throughout the game. Tyler Paulson took care of the Cobras' pitching duties going the distance. Paulson struck out 11 and walked six.

three rivers conference

Elgin-Millville 7, Wabasha-Kellogg 5

Elgin-Millville took advantage of 10 walks. It also got two hits each from Aaron Peterson and Eric Rollie. Randy Spring doubled. The Watchmen moved to 12-4 overall.

A.J. Kohn homered for W-K and Tyson Wolfe, Isaac Perry and Justin Passe each had two hits.

Lewiston-Altura 21, Plainview 11

Titan Haag had four hits and six RBIs and Pete Kreidermacher had four hits in L-A's win.

Shane Haag, Travis Spencer and Jay Stensgard each contributed three hits for the Cardinals, in a game that ended after six innings via the 10-run rule.

L-A moved to 9-7 in the Three Rivers and overall.

Dover-Eyota 9, St. Charles 3

Matt Barrone pitched a five-hitter and struck out 14 for the victory. He walked five and allowed one earned run. Barrone was also 2-for-3 and hit his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot. Jeff Hobbs hit a grand slam for Dover-Eyota (14-2) and Brad Skrukrud went 2-for-4.

Tom Hagan hit an RBI single for St. Charles.

Rushford-Peterson 8, Chatfield 7

Jacob Merchlewitz was 3-for-3 with an RBI and also got the win in relief as Rushford-Peterson upset Chatfield. Merchlewitz struck out seven of 11 hitters he faced. He did allow a two-run homer by Tanner Gilbertson in the top of the seventh. Luke Anderson's RBI pinch-hit single in the bottom of the sixth had given R-P (10-7, 8-7 Three Rivers) an 8-5 lead.

Alex Mirau was 2-for-4 for R-P and J.J. Pettit drove in three runs. Luke Proper hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Chatfield (13-3, 13-2 Three Rivers).

Kingsland 5-8, Southland 3-7

Kingsland had six hits with three errors in the opening game, while the Southland Rebels had four hits with five errors. The losing pitcher was Greg Retterath and the winning pitcher was Tyler Volkert.

Leading the Kingsland offense was Luke Bicknese with two hits, while Zach Sorenson two hits and an RBI. Dan Bakker led the Rebels with a double and two RBIs in the opener.

The late game was a thriller that went into extra innings. Kingsland (10-9) banged out nine hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Brad Bernard had two hits for the Knights. Sorenson had an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Matt Junkers hit an RBI single.

Southeast conference

LOGM 13, Spring Grove 1

LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow totaled 13 hits, three of them by Dustin Thorson. Chad Dooey was 2-for-3 with five RBIs. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Houston 3, Lyle/Pacelli 2

Houston pitcher Chris Carlson had 13 strikeouts and walked none en route to carrying his team to the win.

Carlson singled to drive in Dale Moga with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joe Taylor had two hits and two RBIs for Houston and Carlson had two hits. Nels Nelson had 13 strikeouts as L/P's pitcher.

Glenville-Emmons 5, Mabel-Canton 3 (11 inn.)

Isaiah Parry hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom half of the 11th inning to give G-E a dramatic win. It was a big night at the plate for Parry, as he went 4-for-5 with a double and a homer. Parry also pitched the first six innings for G-E and struck out 11.

Both teams scored three runs in their respective halves of the first inning, then proceeded to play nine-and-a-half scoreless innings. Nathan Gosman belted a three-run homer in the first for M-C. Mitch Meier came on in relief of Parry and pitched the final five innings to get the win; he fanned seven. Aaron Wickett pitched all 11 innings for M-C and struck out 14.

For G-E, Meier went 2-for-4 and Alex Hansen went 2-for-5. Wesley Johnson added two hits for M-C. Each team finished with nine total hits.

SOFTBALL

HIAWATHA VALLEY LEAGUE

Hayfield 2, Kenyon-Wanamingo 0

Cassie Kraetsch pitched a three-hitter for the victory. She struck out 13 and walked one. Megan Gerlach was 2-for-3 and had an RBI single in the second to drive in the game's first run. Tara Kramer was 2-for-4 with a double and scored both runs for Hayfield (8-7). Katie Williams was also 2-for-4.

Kristina Lurken was 2-for-3 for Kenyon-Wanamingo (3-16, 2-7 HVL) Jenna Mering took the loss. She allowed nine hits and one earned run.

Cannon Falls 6, Kasson-Mantorville 1

K-M took the lead 1-0 in their half of the fifth inning but could not hold the lead. Cannon Falls scored three unearned runs on four KoMet errors in the sixth inning to take the lead. Cannon Falls added three insurance runs in the seventh and retired K-M in order in the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Laura Hobert smacked a triple for the Bombers, and Erin Ripley was the winning pitcher.

Stewartville 1, Byron 0

Stewartville's Liz Gehrking and Byron's Hannah Murray dueled to a 1-0 game in Byron with Stewartville coming out on top. Both pitchers relied on their fielders and neither one had a lot of strikeouts. Laura English singled and scored in the fourth inning for the game's only run. Byron got outstanding fielding from Kristen Peterson and Lisa Hoegh.

Three Rivers Conference

St. Charles 7, Dover-Eyota 0

Audrey Decker tossed a one-hitter for the victory. She stuck out 14 and walked one.

Erin Abbott 2-for-3 with a double for St. Charles.

10 hits, eight in the sixth inning scored all seven runs. Liz Miller 3-for-4 and hit a two-run single in sixth ining.

Alissa Christianson was 2-for-2, RBI. St. Charles (12-7, 10-6 Three Rivers)

DE's Sarah Brandt suffered the loss. She allowed only two hits until the sixth inning.

Elgin-Millville 4, Wabasha-Kellogg 2

Candace Olstad hit a one-out double in the eighth inning and scored the winning run on a wild pitch for Elgin-Millville (16-3, 13-3 Three Rivers). Jenna Christensen hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Katie Ohm pitched a seven-hitter for the win, striking out two and walking three. Christensen had two of E-M's five hits.

Amy Glomski was 3-for-4 and scored a run for Wabasha-Kellogg (10-9, 8-8 Three Rivers). Glomski also pitched a five-hitter, but suffered the loss. She struck five and walked four. Kadi Dick was 2-for-4.

Kingsland 2-0, Southland 1-1

Ashley Sabatke pitched a two-hitter as Kingsland won the opener 2-1. She struck out two and walked two. Savanah Oeltjen, who finished 2-for-2, had an RBI single as Kingsland scored both of its runs in the first inning.

Michelle Landherr lost despite a four-hitter. She struck four, walked one and allowed one earned run.

In the second game, Amy Walerak pitched five-hit shutout as Southland won 1-0. She struck out two and did not allow a walk.

Amanda Landherr singled in the Southland sixth and scored on Kathy Olson's two-out RBI single. Landherr finished 2-for-3 scored the run.

Jessy Tammel pitched a six-hitter, but suffered the loss for Kingsland. She walked three and struck out three.

Goodhue 6, Fillmore Central 4

Goodhue broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the sixth inning and went on to win. Nikki Pearson, Briana Gadient, Britta Gadient and Kamie Carlson all had two hits for the Wildcats. Pearson also drove in three runs, while Briana Gadient scored twice. Megan McNamara pitched all seven innings to get the win; she allowed four hits and struck out four. McNamara also issued 10 walks but none of them scored. Hayley Merritt pitched for Fillmore Central; she gave up 10 hits and six walks while striking out one over seven innings. Gabrielle Mueller went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double for the Falcons.

SouthEast Conference

Lyle/Austin Pacelli 3, Houston 1

Louise Mudra pitched a five-hitter and collected a pair of hits to lead Lyle/Austin Pacelli (8-7, 6-3 SEC). Murda struck out 10 and did not walk a hitter. She also singled and scored in both the first and fifth innings.

Kelly Yost hit a two-run single in the first inning, and Becky Anderson followed with an RBI triple in the third to lead G-E to the win. Jenna Brackey allowed three hits and struck out five over six innings to get the win. Ellen Hansen went 2-for-3 and Katie Brackey hit a double, while Mallory Paulson had five assists at third base. M-C scored both runs in the fifth.

Spring Grove/Caledonia 12, LOGM 2

Vanessa Augedahl had three hits, scored twice an had two stolen bases to carry Spring Grove/Caledonia. The game ended after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Angie Ideker tripled to lead off the fifth for SG/C and also scored twice.
