ALBERT LEA — The teachers union in Albert Lea has agreed to defer some training in exchange for saving some teaching jobs.
It’s another example of how school districts around the state are preparing for expected cuts in state aid as the Legislature wrestles with a $4.6 billion deficit.
The Albert Lea school board on Monday took the equivalent of 6 1/2 full-time teachers off the chopping block, which means the equivalent of nine full-time teachers may still be cut.
The Albert Lea Education Association agreed last month to skip staff development for the next school year and renewed its merit-pay program.

The staff development program saves $94,000 and keeping the Q-Comp program will bring in $98,000 in state money.
