Amos Carl Helland -- Lewiston

LEWISTON -- The funeral for Amos Carl Helland will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston, with the Rev. David A. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Lewiston Public Cemetery.

Mr. Helland, 84, of Lewiston, a retired carpenter, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 2004) at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.

He was born June 1, 1920, in Winnebago County, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Thompson, Iowa. On Nov. 21, 1942, he married Ardis Bang in Worth County, Iowa. During World War II, he served with the Navy in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he was a carpenter in Iowa and Wisconsin, and after retiring, he designed and built furniture. In 1986, he and his wife moved to Lewiston. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and reading.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Nelson (Carol) of Lewiston and D. Lon (Susan) of Eau Claire, Wis.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lester of Mondovi, Wis. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, four sisters and four brothers.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Hoff Funeral Homes-Lewiston Chapel and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.
