WEST UNION -Kathryn Appler, of Clermont, was crowned Iowa Brown Swiss Princess earlier this month.
The daughter of Laura and KentAppler will compete in the Iowa Dairy Princesscompetition in August.
A senior at Valley Community High School in Elgin, Appler has been active in 4-H, Brown Swiss and school activities. She was recently named a Governor Scholar. Appler plans to attend either Coe or Loras College next year where she will major in biology/pre-physical therapy.
Appler said she wanted to be Iowa Brown Swiss Princess because she wants to educate other people about the breed.
"Having a Share-a-Heifer changed my life," Appler said. "The Brown Swiss breed has opened up so many doors for me. I have received a National Bellringer award, won a 4-H class at the Iowa State Fair, won numerous showmanships, shown at national shows, won dairy quiz bowl and judged at a national contest at the World Dairy Expo. I wanted to be the Brown Swiss Princess so, I can share my knowledge and love for the brown cow with others and explain this all came from one breed and a Share-a-Heifer named Kuddles."

The Iowa Brown Swiss Distinguished Member Award was presented to Dennis Worden, of Oelwein. Worden recently was president of the Iowa Brown Swiss Association.
Worden and his wife, Joan, own Onword Swiss. All four of their children are involved in farming. Noah, Jacob and Logan are at home, while Jonna and her husband, Lance Schutte, and their children have a dairy operation in Monona.
The Wordens farm 250 acres of soybeans, corn, alfalfa and pasture ground and milk 75 cows with all breeds represented in their tie-stall barn.
This year's Iowa Brown Swiss state picnic will be held at Lance and JonnaSchutte's Monona farm.
Association officers for 2013 are: Randy Frank, of DeWitt, president; Doug Fairbanks, of Anamosa, vice president; and Jonna Schutte, of Monona, secretary-treasurer.
