MANTORVILLE — Dodge County Sheriff Gary Thompson decided it’s time to fish and travel so he has handed in his resignation effective June 30.

The county board is expected to accept the resignation next week. He has strongly recommended that Chief Deputy Jim Trihey fill out his term, which goes through 2010. "He’s looking forward to the challenge, and he will do an awesome job," Thompson said.

Thompson, 62, was first elected in 2002 to replace Sheriff Bill Weber.

"I love my job; I really do," Thompson said. But he and his wife, Betty, who works for Mayo Health Systems, decided the time is right for retirement. They will move to Breezy Point north of Brainerd, Minn.

"There are a lot of fish to be caught up there," Thompson said.

They also plan to travel on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
