SPRING GROVE — The Southeast Conference softball race got a lot tighter after Spring Grove/Caledonia beat Lyle/Austin Pacelli 8-0 on Thursday.

This was the first conference loss of the season for the Lyle/Pacelli Athletics (3-1 SEC). Houston beat SG/C earlier this week and so, now there is a three-way tie for the top spot in the conference standings.

"We hit the ball hard at times, but it was right at their defense," L/P coach Denny Bray said "We only had two hits, and never got a runner past second base. We had some blunders on the bases and I got kind of lonely in the third-base box. Nobody wanted to talk to me and that meant no runs."

Spring Grove/Caledonia pitcher Jane Pettit did give the L/P offense some chances with four walks and a pair of hit batters on the day, but it was to no avail. The game stayed close for the first three innings, but with no offense from the visitors it was only a matter of time before the home team pulled away.

L/P pitcher Nicki Svoboda issued five walks and took her second straight loss. The defense committed four errors and that resulted in half of the SG/C runs being unearned.

"We had a total of eight base runners and three made it to second, but a lot of those chances came with two outs and we couldn’t sacrifice them over," Bray said.

"We’re averaging four errors per game and you can’t win like that. A few nagging injuries are hurting the offense. Plus, our right-fielder Emma Holstrom has been out with a shoulder injury, and we had to make some defensive changes. The girls just have to battle through the adversity."

L/P (3-2 overall) plays host to Glenville-Emmons today in a doubleheader at Todd Park. The L/P girls will be wearing new uniforms for this conference twinbill and coach Bray hopes that puts some fire back into his team.
