Austin boys soccer team suffers first loss of season

Post-Bulletin, Austin MN

WINONA — The Austin Packers boys soccer team lost its first game of the season on Thursday with a 3-2 setback against Winona.

This Big Nine Conference game was close the whole way. The Packers scored the first goal on the night, but the Winhawks countered late in the first half and was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Jacob Brehmer continued his hot start to the season for the Packers with a goal in the opening eight minutes of the first half. Brehmer took a crossing pass from Henry Darling and fired it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

After netting the tying goal late in the first half, the Winhawks took the lead with another goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Back came the Packers and they tied it up with a goal from Henry Darling at 23 minutes into the second half. Alex Klock had the assist on the second Austin goal and was 2-2 heading down the stretch.

"Henry (Darling) took the pass and hit the shot from about 35 yards out," Austin coach Jens Levisen said. "He hit a beautiful shot. It grazed off the crossbar and dropped right into the corner of the net. But they got the late one in the last five minutes and pulled out the win.

"We played solid soccer and I feel we outpassed them, but they got somebody right in front of the net in the final minutes and scored the last goal. It’s still a very solid start to the season and our guys learned a few things on this road trip."

Austin (4-1-1) plays host to Owatonna on Monday.
