BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Just about halfway into a 1.5 mile cross-country run with his teammates, 12-year-old Michael Mundy complained that he was tired and lay down on the grass. The boy died soon afterward.
The cause of his death was still being investigated, but his father, Terry Mundy, said Thursday that the only thing out of the ordinary found in the autopsy was that a portion of Michael's heart was enlarged. Heart specialists will be consulted.
There were no apparent warning signs. Michael passed a physical on June 11, as is required of all athletes in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District. And he had been running with the district's combined junior high team for about three weeks with no problems until Wednesday.
"It was an easy run and it wasn't unusually hot," said Gary Kubat, spokesman for the district.
