AUSTIN EDITION 9-run inning boosts Mayo

The Rochester Mayo baseball team scored all nine of its runs in one inning to beat Winona in Tuesday's season opener.

Tim Gerlesberger led off the big fourth inning for Mayo with a double. He then finished the job with a grand slam over the fence in left-center at Mayo Field as the Spartans won 9-3.

"Tim got a hold of it pretty good," Mayo coach Jim Sonju said. "He pretty much picked up where he left off last year when he was named to the all-State Tournament team."

Gerlesberger finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Josh Brady hit a liner to score a run, Tony Konicek had a sacrifice fly and Jim Strain added an RBI single for Mayo.

All of this run support was more than enough for Mayo pitcher Justin Sokol. The senior hurler for the Spartans had eight strikeouts and just one walk in going the distance.
