AUSTIN EDITION - Austin opens season with a win

Packers beat Kasson-Mantorville

KASSON -- The Austin boys soccer team opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Kasson-Mantorville on Thursday.

Gilberto Sanchez had a goal and two assists for the Packers while Sam Snater added a goal and an assist.

Senior goalie Luke Green stopped six of the seven shots he faced to earn the victory.

"Our game plan worked; our strategy worked," first-year Austin coach Mike Rutter said. "We just have to fine tune it a little more."

The Packers had 20 shots on goal and scored a pair of goals each half. They led 2-0 at the intermission and used a physical and aggressive style of play all game long.

"We should have had four or five more goals," Rutter said. "We have to work on our finishing.

"We were peppering their goalie," he added. "Their goalie was pretty good and aggressive."

Diego Olvera opened the scoring for the Packer. Sanchez made a crossing pass from the right side and Olvera headed the ball into the goal.

"It was a header right off the crossbar. It was perfect," Rutter said.

Sanchez also assisted on the second goal. He sent in a corner kick and Snater dove toward the net and knocked the ball into the net off the inside of his foot.

"It was picture perfect," Rutter said.

David Seibel scored the third goal for Austin and Sanchez closed the scoring on a penalty kick.

"We're were able to penetrate their defense with all sorts of players, not just our forwards," Rutter said.

"I just think it was a good start," he added. "But we have a lot of room to grow."

The Packers will play at Byron on Monday at 7 p.m.
