AUSTIN EDITION Austin to have Wellstone vigil at Mill Pond

From staff reports

There will be a memorial service to honor U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Austin's Mill Pond. State Rep. Rob Leighton and former state Sen. Pat Piper have been asked to give short tributes to the senator, who died in a plane crash Friday. A walk around the Mill Pond will follow.

Those who attend are asked to bring flashlights instead of candles, said Pat Higgins, Mower County DFL chairwoman.

She said the event was organized to help people mourn the loss of someone members of all political affiliations respected.

"I think there's a lot of frustration right now and people don't know where to go or what to do. Many can't go to the Twin Cities (for a tribute there)," she said.

After the walk, the public is invited to the Labor Center, 316 Fourth Ave. N.E., for refreshments.

Higgins said she will not be at the vigil because she is on the state DFL central committee, which will meet Wednesday to choose a replacement for Wellstone on the Nov. 5 ballot.
