AUSTIN EDITION Back-to-School Caring Tree

From staff reports

Staff members at the Salvation Army office are collecting applications for students needing help from the Back-to-School Caring Tree for school supplies.

Applications can be picked up at the 409 First Ave. N.E. office and will be available until Monday. So far, the Salvation Army has collected applications to help 150 children in kindergarten through 12th grade in the community.

The program collects and compiles school supplies for families in need.

Last year, the Caring Tree provided back to school materials for 338 children.

Anyone wanting to help can "adopt" a child from the caring tree in Oak Park Mall's center court starting Friday.

The tree has cards listing the ages, grades, schools and needed supplies for children. People can pick a card and supply a child, make a cash donation or donate supplies or clothing.

Notebooks, folders, crayons, calculators and other items are examples of the items requested by the students.

The tree will be available until Aug. 21.

The Salvation Army is also looking for volunteers to work several hours at the tree. For more information, call 437-4566.
