AUSTIN EDITION - Blue Devils lose on road in overtime

WILLMAR -- Riverland lost a close battle with Ridgewater in overtime on Monday night in men's basketball.

This was a makeup game in the Minnesota Community College Conference, South Division for Friday's game that was postponed due to snow. The Riverland Blue Devils lost their fourth straight game in MCCC South by a 74-72 margin to the Ridgewater Warriors.

"We played really well, but missed a great opportunity to get a win on the road," Riverland coach Darin Johnson said. "We were in the driver's seat, but let it get away. A couple of bad turnovers at the end of regulation and in overtime cost us the game."

Jake Firle had a season-high 27 points to lead the Blue Devils, including 3-for-5 from behind the three-point line. Brett Rhatigan added 16 points for Riverland, but was 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Darren Solbrack led the Warriors with 24 points, before fouling out in overtime. Lance Brown hit key baskets down the stretch and chipped in a pair of three-pointers with 13 total for Ridgewater.

"They tied the game late in the overtime and then we threw it away with 15 seconds left," Johnson said. "After they scored to take the lead, we couldn't counter and dropped a tough one.

"We played well enough to win, deserved to win but didn't win. We haven't been able to close games where we've had chances to win. We had 18 turnovers on the night, which wasn't too bad, but the mistakes came at crucial times."
