AUSTIN EDITION -- Cold shooting leads to loss for Southland boys

ADAMS -- Shooting only 31 percent from the field on Tuesday night, the Southland boys were beaten 65-47 by United South Central of Wells in non-conference basketball action.

The Rebels shot a meager 17 of 52 from the field, including 5 of 24 from beyond the three-point line. The visitors took a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter and made it stand the rest of the way.

"We just had a bad shooting night," Southland coach Greg Storey said. "We were cold in the early going and it had a lot to do with the USC defense.

"They scored 21 points in the first quarter and got the big lead, but we weathered the storm. We cut the deficit to seven with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, but then we had three straight turnovers and they pulled away."

Southland was led in scoring by Dan Bakker with 11 points as he was the only one in double figures on the team. Steve Snyder added a trio of three-pointers in the loss.
