AUSTIN EDITION Fifth-graders second in state

From staff reports

Southgate Elementary School's Quiz Bowl team placed second in the state's fifth-grade division Tuesday afternoon.

The team had a score of 1,169, answering 93 percent of the questions correctly, according to a school district news release. This year's competition had 27 teams.

Southgate's score also was better than all but two of the scores from the 24 sixth-grade teams, which took the same quiz.

The Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a 100-question computer quiz scored both on percentage of right answers and the speed in which correct answers were recorded.

Members of the Southgate team include Patricia Boonreuang, Ethan Larson, Ryan Mentz, Michael Molitor, Tommy Olmsted, Taylor Osmundson, Kelly Posthumus and Bob Sherman. Fifth-grade teacher Bill Kinney is the coach.
