AUSTIN EDITION Johnson shines as Packers defeat Mayo

Whitney Johnson won one event plus the all-around title as host Austin beat Rochester Mayo 123.50-104.825 in Big Nine Conference gymnastics on Thursday.

Johnson won the beam with an 8.6 and captured the all-around with a 32.50 score. She was also third on the bars.

Danielle Chapek was third in the all-around for the Packers with a 30.55. She was second in the floor exercise (8.55) and bars (7.75) and tied teammate Kelly Longueville for third on the vault.

Hayley Astrup was second for Austin on the vault (8.175). Gabby Stiles (beam) and Bethany Larson (floor) both had a third-place finish for the Packers.

"We saw a lot of natural talent from some young gymnasts who now need to refine their skills," Austin coach Billie Jo Wicks said.


The Packers are off until Jan. 2 when they will compete at Winona.
