MASON CITY, IOWA -- The Riverland women's softball team was swept by North Iowa Area Community College in the teams' season openers Thursday.
The Blue Devils mustered only two hits in the opening game against NIACC and lost by a 9-2 score. Riverland pitcher Marissa Kelsey struck out a pair of batters in the loss.
In the opening game, the only two hits by the Lady Devils came from Jenna Cummins and Missy Avery. Cummins stroked a single and Avery had a double to account for the Riverland offense.
The late game was a closer affair, but ended with the same result in a loss for the visiting Blue Devils. Avery led the offense with a home run in the second game. Riverland pitcher Sherry Hansen recorded one strike out in the setback.
Riverland softball (0-2) plays at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, on Monday afternoon.
