AUSTIN EDITION - LET Remember sacrifice during holiday

In Fillmore County a Chatfield police officer recently has been arrested for allegedly burglarizing construction sites. It sounds like a case of putting the fox in charge of guarding the hen house.

Here in Mower County, those in power have just stated explicitly that the local crime rate is decreasing dramatically. Yet, they still are pushing to waste millions of dollars in tax money to build a new, bigger jail and law enforcement center.

It sounds like a no-brainer to me. I hope the electorate at last wakes up by the time the next election rolls around, or preferably before, and doesn't get fooled again. We do not need a bigger new jail and law enforcement center. We need smarter elected officials.

Instead of foolishly squandering millions of dollars of our tax money needlessly building a bigger cage to put people in, we ought to wisely spend a few thousand dollars strengthening that which remains and preserving Marcusen Baseball Park (the Fenway Park of Austin), where we all can continue to gather to have fun in the sun.
