AUSTIN EDITION Mabel-Canton keeps Lyle/Pacelli winless

MABEL -- Defensive pressure by Mabel-Canton forced Lyle/Austin Pacelli into 30 turnovers during Thursday night's 58-48 loss in boys basketball.

This was the first Southeast Conference win in two years for the M-C Cougars. Nathan Pastwa led M-C with a game-high 17 points, his highest scoring output of the season.

Many of the points for the home team came off transition opportunities created by the defense. Jason Krivachek of M-C also posted his best game of the season so far with a dozen points, including a pair of three-pointers.

"We pressed L/P in the first half and it hurt them," M-C coach Orel Tollefson said. "Our man-to-man defensive pressure made a big difference."

The Cougars had 10 steals off the press. The Athletics trailed by only six after the first quarter, but the deficit had jumped into the double-digits by halftime.

Nels Nelson led L/P with 12 points, most of those coming in the second half. Mark Van Winter added nine points as L/P tried in vain to rally in the second half.

"We were only 2-of-10 from the field in the third quarter and they cut the lead back to 10 points on a couple of occasions," Tollefson said. "But we were able to push it back over 10 by the end of the third quarter and then I let everybody play."

Mabel-Canton (2-5, 1-2 SEC) also dominated on the boards with a decided edge in rebounding on the night. Nathan Donald had 10 boards to lead M-C, and Olaf Haugen added nine rebounds in the win

L/P boys (0-8, 0-3 SEC) are off for the Christmas break and return to action on Jan. 7 against LeRoy-Ostrander in Lyle.
