A 19-year-old Austin man faces two counts of fourth-degree assault and two counts of obstructing the legal process after fighting with two police officers early Sunday, said Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp.

Officers went to 609 11th St. N.W. to check on a 911 hang-up call and found the man sitting on the steps. He was bloody and swore at the officers, who could hear a woman screaming inside the home. Another man came out of the house and he, too, was covered with blood, said Philipp.

An officer took out his pepper spray, at which point the first man said he'd fight them if they sprayed him. The officers told the man on the steps that he was under arrest, and he began fighting with them, said Philipp. One officer used his pepper spray on the man, who continued to resist arrest, said Philipp. He was sprayed again before being taken into custody.

The second man told officers he'd been beaten up by the man on the steps but he did not want to press charges, said Philipp. The first man's sister was screaming in response to the fight between the two men, said Philipp.
