AUSTIN EDITION Packers get first win of the season

Austin wins in overtime

LAKEVILLE -- The final basketball game of the year finally brought a victory for the Austin boys on Friday night.

Austin pulled out a 55-52 win over Lakeville North in overtime to end the five-game losing streak that started the season. This was the second game of the Lakeville Holiday Tournament and the Austin Packers finished 2005 with a bang.

"It was 50-50 with about a minute left in regulation and they ran the clock down for the last shot," Austin coach Kris Fadness said. "We didn't let them get a good look and they missed the shot, so we went into overtime. John Stevens hit a three-pointer to give us a 53-50 lead and then we tried to lose it by missing free throws, but the guys still got it done."

Stevens had four treys on the night and scored 13 points for the Packers. He's scored in double figures in all of the six games this season.

The big story for Austin was the inside play of Joe Maus. The Packers had a presence in the post as Maus scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a dominating performance.

"That's the best I've ever seen him (Maus) play, he did it all," Fadness said. "I'm very happy to get that first win. We played well in this tournament and hopefully, this win will give us confidence heading into the new year."

Ben Flavin led Lakeville North with 15 points, but was held below his season average by the defensive play of Austin's Nick Stackenwalt. A night after he held the state's leading scorer, Eric Carlson of Shakopee, to 10 points under his average, Stackenwalt came up with another strong defensive effort to help the Packers get their first win.

"Stackenwalt has their best guy defensively and he's stopped them from going nuts, so his hustle keeps us in the game," Fadness said. "I'm really proud of our guys. It's been a tough start to the season, but they hung in there and kept fighting. We handled their press and it's a good win against a quality club."

Austin (1-5) returns to Big Nine Conference play on Friday night at Rochester John Marshall.
