AUSTIN EDITION Packers rally, pull out win over Mayo

Lyon drives in winning run in seventh

Austin rallied from a 2-0 deficit to nip Rochester Mayo 3-2 in Big Nine Conference baseball on Saturday.

The Packers scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to pull out the victory and move to 4-2 on the season.

"It was a nice comeback victory," Packers coach Troy Watkins said.

With the game tied 2-2 going in the bottom of the seventh, Joey Kroc walked with one out to start the winning rally. Nate Johnson followed with a single to move Kroc to third. Andy Swank was intentionally walked and Davis Lyon followed with a sacrifice fly to left to end the game.

"We executed offensively that was the key," Watkins said. "We were able to manufacture runs and that's what we needed to do."

The Packers bunted runners into scoring position to score their first two runs. Alex Kaiser singled to open the Austin fifth and Kroc bunted him to second. Johnson's single put runners on the corners and Swank hit a sacrifice fly.

Austin tied the game in the sixth. Marcus Ball singled, took second on Tim Kirby's bunt and scored the tying run on a error.

Swank improved his record to 2-0 with an eight-hitter. He struck out seven and walked two.

"Andy Swank pitched a really nice game," Watkins said. "They scored some runs early and then he settled down. He got a lot of groundballs and we made the plays in the field."

Mayo scored single runs in the first and second inning before Swank shut the down. The Spartans were coming off a 1-0 victory over city rival Century on Friday night.

"I'm sure for them it was tough to come and play," Watkins said.

The Packers also had eight hits. Johnson was 3-for-4 and Swank was 2-for-2.
