AUSTIN EDITION -- RCTC women fall just short with big effort

BRAINERD, Minn. -- A strong performance came down to a final shot that wouldn't go, and Rochester Community and Technical College was edged out of the state women's basketball tournament in a 69-68 loss to Northland.

"We played great," Yellowjackets coach Angie Meister said. "It was an awesome effort from the whole team. We got off to a great start, held them scoreless the first five minutes. We led the whole game except right before halftime and right at the end."

Northland scored with 17 seconds left to take a one-point lead. RCTC called time out and set up for a last-second shot that Meister said "was a good shot," but it missed and RCTC was eliminated from state championship contention.

Michelle Melquist scored 18 points, Jenni Fisher 15 and Heidi Johnson 12. Holly Kasten hauled down 12 rebounds as the Yellowjackets led 58-35 in that statistic. Leah Karli had four assists and Lindsey Halvorson had four steals.

RCTC took a 13-12 mark into consolation play this afternoon.
