ROCHESTER -- Southland Rebels volleyball took second place at the Rochester Century Tournament on Saturday.
Rochester Mayo defeated Southland in the championship match to take the top spot on the day. Southland had Century, Blooming Prairie, and Hayfield in its pool.
The Rebels started the day with a three-game win over the host Century Panthers by scores of 25-15, 18-25, and 15-5. In the second match, the Rebels lost to the Blossoms of Blooming Prairie 25-21 and 25-16.
Southland then beat Hayfield 30-28 and 25-16 in the final match of pool play. Century also bested Blooming Prairie and by virtue of a tie-breaker, the Rebels got into the title match. Mayo won the championship 25-15, 25-18.
"We played some good volleyball and got second, it was a good effort by our girls," Southland coach Darica Schneider said. "It was still anybody's game after the first two matches of pool play. We all were tied with 1-1 records, so it came down to the last match. We won and so did Century, but since we beat them in head-to-head competition then we got to go to the finals."
