AUSTIN EDITION Red Wing crocks stolen in Austin area

From staff reports

Red Wing pottery crocks are disappearing from area homes, and Austin police warn owners to keep an eye on their pots.

Crocks, many used as planters or decoration in front of homes, have been reported stolen in recent weeks, Capt. Curt Rude said.

"We advise people who have these to take extra precaution," Rude said. "They're disappearing, and we don't know what they're doing with them."

Rude said the thief likely drives around during the day to look for the pottery, and then returns at night to take them.

Many of the crocks were made around the turn of the century from clay found in Red Wing. The value of the pottery depends on its size and condition, Rude said.

Police will look online and talk to area antique dealers to see if the crocks are being sold, Rude said.
