With four letterwinners returning, the Southland/Grand Meadow girls golf team should see an improvement in its place among the Southeast Conference, West Division standings this season.
Long-time golf coach Wayne Robertson has some experience to work with on the girls team this season and that will mean a better overall record. Last year, the Southland/GM girls finished with a 1-6 record.
Lindsay Viker, the only senior on the team, was honorable mention for the all-SEC West squad last season. Viker and Charlotte Retterath, now a sophomore, were the co-Most Valuable Players last season.

"We're rebuilding and hoping to improve," Robertson said of the upcoming season. "With Viker and Retterath back, we'll have a lot more experience this season to build around. The goal for the girls is to have some fun and be competitive this season."
Adding more experience to the mix are ninth-graders Cathy Schneider and Megan Underdahl. Both Schneider and Underdahl lettered last spring, so they'll be key factors in the success of the S/GM girls this season.
Two other freshmen round out the roster for Southland/Grand Meadow. Heather Reiten and Rachel Simon make it a total of six golfers on the S/GM roster card.
"We were able to take the boys down to Iowa for a round of golf, but the girls haven't been outside at all and that makes it tough for the opener later in the week," Robertson said.
"Still, with the girls coming back, we should have a pretty good team this season."
Cedar River Country Club is tentatively scheduled to open for business on Wednesday, so the season opener for the S/GM girls is on for Thursday afternoon against Kingsland in Adams.
