Someone broke into St. John's Lutheran Church on Tuesday, and a safe was stolen from the rectory.

Staff at the church at 65033 220th St., Austin, reported the burglary.

The break-in happened sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday, according to reports.

Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said a burglar went in through the front entry of the building and broke the glass in a locked door.

A 20- by 26-inch gray safe with a combination lock was taken from the rectory. The safe contained records and old church books, according to church personnel.

Money from a Sunday school collection that was sitting out in another room in the basement was not taken.

Damage was estimated at $1,400.
