AUSTIN EDITION 'Silent Spring' is Winona's community book

WINONA -- The fourth annual Winona Reads community book project will focus on the book "Silent Spring," by Rachel Carson.

The book deals with how the use of chemicals affects the environment.

Winona Public Library has an extra 75 copies of the book for patrons to borrow, and local bookstores have extra copies for sale.

People in Winona are encouraged to read the book and discuss it. A discussion packet that includes guidelines, questions and a bibliography is available at the library.

Public discussions will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 and 2 p.m. Jan. 4 at the library; 2 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Book Shelf, 619 Huff St.; noon Jan. 25 at the Winona County Historical Society; and 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at Blooming Grounds Coffee House.

A panel discussion on the book is planned for February.
