AUSTIN EDITION SUGHED: Errors put an end to Post 91 win streak

Bad habits resurfaced Wednesday night for Austin American Legion baseball and its five-game winning streak is history.

The boys from Austin Post 91 had played nearly error free during their recent winning streak, but that all changed against Winona LeJetz in a make-up doubleheader at the Riverland Complex.

Post 91 committed a total of 11 errors and lost both games of the First District twinbill. Both games went to extra innings, but the visitors prevailed.

Winona scored a run in the top of the 11th inning to win the opener 4-3. The late game was another nail-biter with LeJetz pulling out a 2-1 win in eight innings.

"There was good news and bad news from this doubleheader," Post 91 coach Bob Stratton said. "The good part was we played them close in both games.

"The bad news was our poor defensive play in the field. We still had numerous chances to win both games, but couldn't get the big hit."

Conor Johnson started on the mound for Post 91 in the opener, but didn't figure in the decision. Tim Kirby came on in relief in the seventh inning and finished the game.

Austin trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the second, when Kirby doubled to score Nate Wilson from first base. Kirby then scored on a grounder by Dan Swatfager to give Post 91 the lead.

Winona tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fifth. After a 15-minute rain delay in the top of the 11th, LeJetz got a triple from Ben Kohner. Jason Appicelli then hit a RBI single, and that was the difference.

Will Kujak of Winona won the first game in relief, and he went the distance on the mound to also record the late win. Post 91 got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth in the second game, but it wasn't enough.

Sam Holst started on the hill for Austin in the late game, but didn't figure in the decision. Wilson took the loss with two innings of relief for Post 91.

The home team had more hits than the visitors in the late affair, but a half-dozen errors were its undoing. Cory Hernandez doubled and scored Austin's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Post 91 (13-10, 7-6 First District) finishes the regular season with a doubleheader today against the Rochester Red Hawks at Marcusen Park. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
